In the quiet evening of September 23rd the fourth this autumn count of migrating Common Cranes was carried out. This time we invited local people from Tyruliai village to take part in the count. The ecologists and young volunteers from Tytuvenai and Dubysa regional parks also joined.

At 6 pm, after explanation of the counting methods and forming 3 count groups, we started our work from 3 different places of the bog. This method was effective, as we could not only count landing birds, but also flocks passing by to the other staging places. Common Cranes appeared before 7, the count lasted till complete darkness. The number of birds now is less, gradually they are leaving our country, but the numbers are still impressive - during Friday count we registered 1629 Common Cranes landing for night stay in Tyruliai bog, and 500 birds passing over (08.23 560 birds registered, 09.05 - 1112, and 09.15 - 1860).

People had possibility to see other species of birds and mammals. We were surprised by huge flocks of Barn Swallows, House Martins and Sand Martins, also flying for night stay in Tyruliai. A pleasant surprise was an elk and some deers seen from exposition tower, a Tawny Owl heard, and a lot of waterbirds seen before sunset.

After the count the results were shared in community house with the cup of tea. Local people will always be welcome in our monitoring works.
